Do Emojis on a Dating App Mean Drug Crime?

Question

Dating apps are a hotbed of ambiguity, confusion, and frustration.  It is hard enough to tell if someone is flirting with you when you interact in real life.  Is he smiling because he likes you, or is it because you can both hear the ice cream truck tinkling “Turkey in the Straw” in the distance, and everybody loves ice cream?  When you chat with someone on a dating app, and she ends every message with “lol,” is it self-deprecating humor or passive aggression?  Emojis are the most perplexing of all.  Since when is an eggplant emoji a sexual innuendo?  There is nothing remotely funny about the skull emoji, and it has exponentially less facial expression than any of the smileys, so why does it stand for laughter?  How can a giraffe emoji mean anything other than “giraffe”?  Is this about the giraffe that got struck by lightning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom a few years back, and if so, why is she texting it to you instead of giving you a straight answer about whether she wants to meet you for dinner on Friday at Rainforest Café?  It is all a painful reminder that you are too old to be single.  Police in Florida recently discovered that certain emojis, even when transmitted on dating apps, are a secret code for drug sales, although this is news to most of us.  If you texted an innocent ice cream code emoji because you were in the mood for Dairy Queen, and now you are facing drug charges, contact a Florida drug offenses attorney.

A Date With Crystal?

Everyone knows that young people these days have about as much enthusiasm for dating as they do for dinner napkins and fast casual restaurants like Applebee’s, so why are all the dating apps blowing up all of a sudden?  Why are the dudes on Grindr texting each other emojis of birthday cakes and ice cream?  Shouldn’t they be more concerned about their physique in Florida, where guys go shirtless year-round?  For that matter, if you want a date with Tina, it stands to reason that Grindr is not the app you would choose, so why does everyone on Grindr seem so interested in her?

It all seemed suspicious, so the Polk County Sheriff’s Office undertook an operation called “Swipe Left for Meth.”  They found that people were using dating apps like Grindr, Scruff, and Taimi to advertise methamphetamine for sale.  They referred to the drug by euphemisms such as “party” and “Tina” and by emojis such as birthday cake and ice cream.  Undercover officers created profiles on the apps and responded to messages adorned with emojis of sweet treats.  Soon they found their interlocutors arranging to meet up and sell not only methamphetamine but also fentanyl, cocaine, cannabis, LSD, and MDMA.
