Psilocybin Mushrooms Test Positive for LSD in Florida Crime Labs

Mushrooms_

The biggest danger of fentanyl is that it is almost invisible.  A tiny grain of fentanyl powder, smaller than a grain of sand, can produce effects as strong as a commercially produced oxycodone pill, and even though Floridians’ math scores may be abysmal, drug dealers understand the economic implications of this.  Fentanyl can turn up in almost any kind of street drug, including non-opioids.  You might find fentanyl in counterfeit oxycodone pills or in a powder that purports to be heroin, but you also might find it mixed with cocaine or amphetamines, or you might find it in counterfeit Adderall or Xanax pills.  Tablets that claim to be MDMA might turn out to contain fentanyl, and it might even be mixed into a harmless looking bag of weed.  You might roll your eyes at the idea of vegan junk food, but at the same time, you might brag that you don’t mess with dangerous drugs, because you only get high on substances where you can see the plant or fungus that it came from.  Florida crime labs have started to detect psilocybin mushrooms contaminated with stronger substances.  If you are facing criminal charges for illegal possession of psilocybin mushrooms or other hallucinogens, contact a Florida drug offenses attorney.

Sometimes Magic Mushrooms Are Not What They Seem

In the summer of 2024, crime labs in Florida tested psilocybin mushrooms seized during arrests and found that some of them tested positive for LSD.  Psilocybin mushrooms are time consuming to grow.  To make a more potent product, dealers might add small amounts of LSD, which has stronger hallucinogenic effects than psilocybin.  If they are selling psilocybin edibles, they might add LSD to increase their profits, since LSD is less expensive.  LSD-laced psilocybin mushrooms are the hallucinogen equivalent of fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills, although no fatal overdoses on LSD have been recorded.

In July 2024, two teen boys were hospitalized in Indian River County after they ingested psilocybin mushrooms which, unbeknownst to them, had LSD added to them.  The boys were experiencing severe symptoms of psychosis.  This is not the only time that police confiscated drugs which the bearers believed were only psilocybin, but they later found that they also contained LSD.

Even though hallucinogens had their moment, it seems that the days of medical shrooms and medical LSD have passed.  Yes, there were some clinical trials, but psilocybin mushrooms are now illegal in Florida, and LSD always has been.  In fact, Florida legislators have just approved a bill that would criminalize the possession or delivery of psilocybin spores.  Spores are to fungi what seeds are to plants, and psilocybin spores do not contain any hallucinogenic compounds.
