School Custodian Faces Charges for Drug Possession

Drug_

If you are too old to find the phrase “six seven” entertaining, then you probably get a kick out of droning, “Drugs are bad,” in a faux old person voice. It is in school where many of us first heard adults whom the generation above us would have described as “square” scold us about the dangers of drugs. Unsurprisingly, drug possession is even more illegal when you and the drugs are in or near a school. Schools are among the legally designated “drug-free zones” where enhanced penalties for drug possession apply. Schools are also mind-numbing places that are considerably easier to tolerate when you are under the influence of drugs than when you are not. This is true when you are a student, but it is even more obvious when you have the thankless job of cleaning up after students in exchange for chump change. If you are a school employee, and you are facing criminal charges for possessing illegal drugs while you were at work, contact a Florida drug offenses attorney.

Students Claim That They Saw Bag of Drugs Fall Out of Custodian’s Pocket in School Hallway

Until recently, Edward Berg worked as a custodian at Indian Ridge Middle School in Broward County. The trouble started when a school security guard was walking down a hallway in the school with the assistant principal, and they saw a small bag filled with white powder on the floor of the school. They reported the incident to law enforcement, and a crime lab tested the powder and determined that its active ingredient was cocaine. The quantity was approximately one gram.

During the investigation, police reviewed security camera footage from the school that showed that the bag of cocaine fell from Berg’s pants pocket while he was trying to take his cell phone out of his pocket during his shift. In September 2025, police arrested Berg while he was at work at the school and took him to the Broward County Jail. He is facing criminal charges for illegal possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone. According to the most recent reports about the case, Berg had posted bond and was free while his case was pending.

Unfortunately, the drug charges are only the beginning of Berg’s legal troubles. Shortly after his arrest, a student at the school where Berg works sat for an interview with the local news station; her mother also participated in the interview. She said that Berg’s behavior made her and other students uncomfortable. For example, she claimed that, on several occasions, Berg sat at a table in the cafeteria with the student and her friends during lunch and made rude comments about the girls’ appearance. The student’s mother told the interviewer that she had complained to the school about Berg. He has not faced criminal charges for his alleged behavior toward students.
