Sheriff’s Deputies Bust DMT Lab Near Middle School

GavelJustice

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is the edgiest plant-based substance you have never heard of, but its presence is well enough established that federal and state laws classify it as a Schedule I controlled substance. DMT is one of the active ingredients in ayahuasca, the entheogenic drink that has been consumed by the peoples of the Amazon for centuries, and which spiritual seekers have recently begun to travel great distances to try. Of course, some people want the hallucinogenic effects of DMT without going through the entire ayahuasca ceremony. Therefore, some illegal sales of DMT in the United States involve DMT in smokeable form. A DMT lab resembles a meth lab, and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies recently executed a search warrant at a house where they believe that the residents were manufacturing both drugs, DMT and methamphetamine, with intent to distribute. It turns out that this DMT lab was in one of the worst possible places. If you are facing criminal charges for allegedly manufacturing illicit drugs in a drug-free zone, contact a Florida drug offenses attorney.

Deputies Find Pharmacopeia of Drugs in Tampa House

Drug-free zones are the 1,000-foot radius around schools, parks, community centers, assisted living facilities, and several other categories of places where children or other vulnerable people are likely to be present. Enhanced penalties apply to convictions for drug crimes that take place in drug-free zones. The penalties for drug possession in a drug-free zone are worse than the penalties for drug possession anywhere else, and the same applies to drug crimes more serious than simple possession.

In November 2025, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at a house in Tampa down the street from Ben Hill Middle School. The court had issued the warrant because deputies had shown evidence that, if they searched the house, they would find the ingredients and equipment for the manufacture of illegal drugs. When they searched the house, they found evidence of the manufacture of methamphetamine. They also found an assortment of other drugs, such as cannabis, cocaine, fentanyl, ketamine, alprazolam, LSD, and MDMA, plus several firearms.

They arrested two of the occupants of the house. Rosa Silva, 53, is facing charges for drug possession. Edward Royse, 31, is facing a longer list of charges. His charges include drug trafficking, manufacturing controlled substances, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, to name only the most serious charges. The proximity of the drug activity to a middle school will lead to longer prison terms if the defendants are convicted. News sources did not say whether Silva has prior drug convictions; if she does not, then she may be able to get her charges dropped by participating in a pretrial intervention program, also known as drug court.
