What does beyond a reasonable doubt mean?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

Beyond a reasonable doubt is the highest standard in the justice system in the state of Florida. And it’s only for criminal cases, it’s higher than civil cases, higher than family law cases. And proof beyond a reasonable doubt, it’s beyond a possible doubt, speculative doubt. When I’m presenting cases to juries, I like to say that it’s the putting your head on a pillow at night. When you’re putting your head on a pillow at night, you have to sit there, you have to be sure, you can’t have second guesses, you can’t have second thoughts, you have to be able to sleep good that night knowing that you did the right thing and have no doubts that you did the right thing, that’s proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
